HSSE week: a Week Dedicated to Generative Safety Culture at PETRONAS Lubricants Italy. Training, Prevention, and Shared Values.

From safe driving simulators to meetings with Civil Protection teams, and including sessions on healthy eating, self-defense, and safety awareness: the HSSE (Health, Safety, Security & Environment) Generative Culture Week at PETRONAS Lubricants International once again proved to be a key event to engage employees and stakeholders on themes of health, safety, and well-being, both in and outside the workplace.

The 2025 edition involved PETRONAS Lubricants Italy’s sites in Santena, Villastellone, and Naples, offering a rich program of training sessions, hands-on experiences, and interactive activities—such as the HSSE-themed Escape Room and team games organized in collaboration with Zoom Torino and the “BeeZoomazing” campaign. The program tackled operational topics like earthquake risk prevention, as well as issues related to personal awareness, nutrition, and road safety.

In Santena, one of the most anticipated guests was Paralympic athlete Alessandro Ossola, who delivered an inspiring talk. His testimony powerfully highlighted the value of resilience and self-awareness as tools for personal growth: “I was honored to speak at PETRONAS. Sharing my journey and the obstacles I’ve overcome allowed me to show how challenges—no matter how insurmountable they may seem—can be managed.”

Also, in Santena, Olympic race-walking champion Maurizio Damilano introduced the Fitwalking® method, a philosophy of mindful walking. Notable was the participation of social organizations such as UGI and the Francesca Caparelli Association, with which PETRONAS Lubricants Italy began a collaboration this year. “We were honored to take part in the HSSE Week,” said representatives from the Association. “The Francesca Caparelli Association was created to promote cancer prevention and raise awareness about medical donation opportunities. The event also provided a space to highlight the synergy developed over seven years of collaboration with UGI Torino, which has consistently supported us. UGI plays a vital role in supporting children and youth affected by illness, as well as their families.”

In Naples, the Blue-Collar Day opened with activities held in collaboration with Falchi del Sud, a Civil Protection unit recently recognized by the Campania Region. “As an Operational Civil Protection Center, we Falchi del Sud place great importance on training and informing the public. Meetings with local companies are crucial: even if you don’t live in a red zone,” the Center explained, “you may work or spend many hours there. It’s essential to know how to act.” The session focused on the bradyseismic risks of the Phlegraean Fields and the comparison with Vesuvius’s emergency plan, encouraging discussion on best practices during risk situations.

The program also included self-defense classes, driving simulator experiences, and training on “Nutrition and Work” led by the company’s occupational physician. Among the highlights was a talk by Dr. Roberta Bosio, a travel medicine expert, who emphasized the importance of safe and informed travel: “Traveling is enriching, but doing it safely is essential. I truly appreciate that a company would dedicate this kind of space to its people.”

Completing the program, sports doctor Simone Lapi provided medical check-ups for employees.
“The welcome I received exceeded my expectations,” he said. “Many colleagues expressed enthusiasm for the week’s initiatives, aware that such opportunities should never be taken for granted.” The synergy between the different sites helped strengthen team spirit and a sense of belonging, supported by shared multimedia content and internal communication.

“Building a culture of safety means first and foremost building a culture of people,” explained Giuseppe Pedretti, Managing Director EMEA at PETRONAS Lubricants International.
“It means fostering trust, active listening, and the courage to act—creating an environment where dialogue thrives and everyone feels they play an active role in maintaining safe conditions. At PETRONAS, we believe safety should be grounded in experience, collaboration, and authentic leadership. It’s not something to impose—it’s a value to be lived, together, every day.”

At the heart of this generative vision is shared responsibility, starting with leadership.
“Approaching near misses with a spirit of analysis, not blame, enables us to grow together,” Pedretti continued. “Leadership must lead by example and drive meaningful change.”
Generative culture, therefore, is not just a strategy—it’s a way of being and working together, every day.

This initiative, fully aligned with PETRONAS’s core values—inclusion, sustainability, innovation, and the enhancement of human capital—has further strengthened the bond between the company and the community, sending a clear message: safety starts with us.
